Position Summary

This is a full-time, faculty term appointment with the Medical Laboratory Technician program.

The instructor is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities.

The instructor is responsible for performing assigned teaching duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus as assigned.

At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, instructional counseling, academic advising, serving on various committees, participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares and delivers lectures on topics such as medical hematology, immunohematology, and phlebotomy for
    Medical Laboratory Technician program.
  • Full-time load is 15 hours per semester.
    Compiles, administers, evaluates and grades students’ class work, assignments, tests, and papers; and keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers and other work.
  • Develops curricula and instructional material such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Maintains office hours for students seeking academic advice, assists in student recruitment and retention; and assists students with course-related problems outside of the classroom.
  • Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations.
  • Attends faculty meetings, college assemblies, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.
  • May perform other duties as assign by Department Head/Dean.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (Must be a graduate of a NAACLS approved medical technology program or medical laboratory program.)
  • Minimum of four (4) years clinical lab
    experience
  • Current Tennessee license as a clinical laboratory scientist/medical technologist.
  • Ability to teach Medical Laboratory Technician classes using various instructional delivery methods at all campus locations.

  • Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points be made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to work with academically and culturally diverse student population.
  • Ability to convey complex concepts to students.
  • Ability to use technology for classroom and laboratory instruction and to manage student records.
  • Excellent teaching and organizational skills
  • Exhibit emotional control and stability and stress management and coping ability.
  • A background check will be required for the successful candidate.
