Position Summary

The Assistive Technology Specialist is responsible for conducting accessibility compliance testing, training designers and developers on using W3C standards and providing online accommodations with alternative media, as well as ensure compliance and educate staff, designers, developers, and faculty on the application of ADA/504/508 legal obligations/guidance. The Assistive Technology Specialist will also help with general instructional design, development, and training as needed.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct accessibility compliance testing by conducting full reviews, analysis, and functional testing for new development and remediation, using various methodologies including automated testing tools, manual tests, and assistive technology usage for TN eCampus.

Support and train designers and developers on using W3C standards and how to provide online accommodations with alternative media.

Ensure compliance with the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 and Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended 2008 requirements concerning disability issues.

Educate staff, designers, developers, and faculty on the application of ADA, 504, and 508 legal obligations/guidance, which may include distributing training materials to support digital accessibility.

Maintain accessibility reports as they relate to course and instructional materials.

Develop and maintain a current resource bank of access strategies for the various types of disabilities.

Troubleshoot accessibility and assistive technology issues.

Research and keep abreast of emerging technology, industry accessibility standards, guidelines, best practices and tools for developing accessible courses and instructional materials.

Develop and maintain accessibility review standards, guidelines and best practices.

Assist with general instructional design, development, and training.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Design or related field PLUS minimum 2 years experience in assessing accessibility compliance and creating strategies to meet legal requirements OR Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Design or related field PLUS Assistive Technology Certificate (i.e. CSUN ATACP or RESNA ATP within the first year of employment.

Experience using tools to aid in accessibility evaluation.

Successful candidate must either possess or have the ability and willingness to pursue the Assistive Technology Certificate (i.e. CSUN ATACP or RESNA ATP) within the first year of employment.

Experience with ADA compliance issues relating to instructional design for online delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of mobile device accessibility/assistive technology for online delivery.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

Knowledge of ADA policies and guidelines.

Knowledge of the application of ADA/504/508 legal obligations/guidance and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 A-AA and 508 VPAT.

Ability to analyze course/instructional materials, and online media/software and provide support to content developers/instructional designers with respect to accessibility.

Thorough knowledge of accessibility testing techniques using automated and manual testing procedures including manually testing instructional content, media and software for accessibility using assistive technologies (screen reader, magnification and speech recognition/alternate input).

Awareness of disability related issues with respect to accessing information, communication, course/instructional materials and emerging technologies.

Knowledge of and experience with instructional design methodology, theory, and application in relation to web-based training, design, and development.

Knowledge of specialized software and course designs to create accessible courses for users with disabilities.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Prioritization skills and capacity to manage multiple deadlines.

Ability to relate technical information to non-technical people.
