Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. • This is a full-time, 9-month faculty appointment within the department of Natural Sciences, reporting to the Department Head.

• The Instructor is responsible for the planning, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities.

• The instructor is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus.

• At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, academic advising, serving on various committees, and participating in professional activities and organizations.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepares and delivers instruction on topics in the biological sciences.

• Compiles, administers, evaluates and grades students’ class work, laboratory work, assignments, tests, and papers fairly and consistently; and keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers and other work.

• Develops curricula and instructional material such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.

• Maintains office hours for students seeking academic advice, assists in student recruitment and retention; and assists students with course-related problems outside of the classroom.

• Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations.

• Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.

• Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.

• Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.

• May perform other duties as assign by Department Head/Dean.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Biology or master’s degree in the Biological Sciences with 18 graduate hours from an accredited higher education institution, also with nine graduate hours in microbiology and nine hours of graduate or undergraduate coursework relevant to anatomy and physiology and meet Human Anatomy and Physiology SocietyHAPS (HAPS) standards. Candidates with professional degrees (M.S.N., M.D., D.O., D.C. or D.V.M.) must meet HAPS standards.

• Minimum two (2) years teaching experience in higher education or one (1) year teaching experience and three (3) years employment in the field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a biological science, meet the coursework or HAPS standards and can teach across the biological science discipline.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

• Ability to teach Biology classes using various instructional delivery methods at any of the five (5) locations.

• Knowledge and ability to convey complex biological science concepts to a diverse student population, including selecting and implementing training and instructional methods appropriate for learning or teaching new concepts to a diverse student population. Knowledge and understanding of a college academic environment.

• Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning; experience interacting successfully with academically and culturally diverse student populations.

• Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

• Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

• Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.

• Ability to interact with a diverse population.

• Ability to work with academically and culturally diverse student population.

• Ability to convey complex concepts to students.

• Ability to use technology for classroom and laboratory instruction and to manage student records.

• Excellent teaching and organizational skills.

• Exhibit emotional control and stability and stress management and coping ability.
