Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. • As a Cyber Defense Instructor you will work directly with students to help them learn and master their craft.

• You will be responsible for teaching the concepts, tools and techniques used by Cyber Security Incident Response Teams to effectively defend networks from advanced cyber threats.

• The Instructor is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities.

• The Instructor is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Southwest Tennessee Community College campus as assigned.

• At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, instructional counseling, academic advising, serving on various committees, participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepares course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, handouts and delivers lectures to students on topics such as the full range of cyber defense skills of hardening, monitoring, pursuit, and cyber intelligence. Full-time load is 15 TLEs (Teaching Load Equivalencies) per semester.

• Compiles, administers, evaluate and grade students’ coursework, laboratory work, assignments, and papers fairly and consistently; and keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers and other work.

• Maintains office hours for performing academic advising for students, assist students with course-related problems outside of the classroom (tutoring), and others.
• Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations.

• Participates in departmental and college committees; assists in the program’s activities; assists in the planning and implementation of the CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) plan at the department and program levels; and provides outreach service to the community.

• Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.

• Develops and writes student laboratory exercises handouts and conduct student laboratory sessions for courses taught.

• Stay abreast of the latest in cyber security defenses, methodologies, policy and breaches, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.

• May perform other duties as assigned by Department Head/Dean.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science education, computer technology, computer information systems, computer networking, technologies, computer-based information systems (e.g., management, decision). Software engineering and business or engineering programs with appropriate computer science or computer programming course work or associate’s degree and demonstrate competencies in the teaching discipline.

• Security experience, Security + certification, A+ certification

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred security credentials include GCIH, GCIA, GCWN, GCUX, OSCP, CISSP or demonstrable equivalent knowledge. ITIL knowledge a plus. Professional level certification in vendor platforms such as Windows, RedHat, Cisco, or other systems a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

• Knowledge and the understanding of cyber security recommended best practices (NIST, SANS, CIS, DoD)

• Experience in cyber red-blue exercise concepts as a learning technique

• Knowledge of the current state-of-the-art in computer and network security practices and research, to include exploit mitigation, countermeasures, detection, forensic, auditing, and other defensive tools

• Complete understanding of adversary kill-chain and exploitation scenarios

• Broad knowledge of standard cyber defense tools such as logging and monitoring, along with deep specialization knowledge in one of Windows Domain Security, Windows Forensics, Linux Security, or Network Security

• Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation.

• Knowledge in several aspects of cyber security as applied to Windows, Linux, Network Infrastructure, and cyber Intelligence.

• Knowledge and understanding of a college academic environment.

• Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning; experience interacting successfully with academically and culturally diverse student populations.

• Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

• Skill in selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things. Skill in appropriate computer operations.

• Skill in excellent teaching and organization.

• Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

• Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.

• Ability to interact with a diverse population.

• Ability to exhibit emotional control and stability and manage stress.
