Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. Southwest began operation on July 1, 2000, through legislation that consolidated Shelby State Community College and State Technical Institute at Memphis. Southwest has 6 campuses/centers from which it offers over 100 programs and over 20 technical certificate programs. • This is a full-time grant funded position in International Studies.

• The International Studies Specialist interacts with students and faculty members; assisting with study abroad programs, developing activities for visiting international students and faculty members, integrating international students into our Southwest Tennessee community.

• Assisting with ESL orientation, and works with the Campus Activity Board to implement activities for students on campus to experience International cultures.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees student’s service learning obligations to International Studies. Creates events and works with student activities to make sure all scholarship requirements are fulfilled.

• Facilitates stay of international student visitors by ensuring that proper services are available; specifically bi-annual Danish groups visit from Naestved and Svendborg.

• Manages students applications, interviews potential study abroad candidates, and prepares students for the study abroad experience.

• Develops marketing materials, markets, visits classrooms, and informs students about study abroad opportunities.

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

• One (1) experience in student centered customer service, international coordination and event planning.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

• Knowledge of Student application processes and interview techniques.

• Knowledge of International Student Services and International Studies.

• Ability to organize and manage schedules activities efficiently and effectively.

• Ability to communicate, both oral and written effectively.
