Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. The Academic Advisor is a full-time, fiscal year permanent position within the Department of Advising and Academic Support.

This position requires a minimum of 37.5 hours per week.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Advises students of course requirement to fulfill certificate or degree programs.

• Assists students in course selection, registration, drop/add, and withdrawal of courses.

• Evaluates college transcripts for incoming students.

• Understands, interprets and explains the requirement and academic options in a specific area and in other campus departments to facilitate the student’s pursuit of fields of interest.

• Administers, interprets and/or discusses the results of career interest inventories with students.

• Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), college policies, and administrative regulations.

• Works closely with other advisors, faculty, and staff to provide timely information on course/degree options and institutional policies and procedures to students.

• Administer, interpret and/or discuss the results of career interest inventories with students.

• Maintain and update records and student files.

• Interpret and explain institutional policies and procedures to students.

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, human services or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with students in a post-secondary institution.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

• Knowledge of University and degree requirements, advising practices and principles, and time management techniques.

• Ability to provide a high standard of customer service when assisting students with problem resolution, and ability to seek input from alternate authority if necessary.

• Ability to keep up-to-date changes in policies and procedures to maintain current working knowledge.

• Ability to use good judgment and work effectively under pressure.

• Ability to record and maintain files accurately, in paper and software programs.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

• Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations.

• Ability to communicate efficiently.
