Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. Southwest began operation on July 1, 2000, through legislation that consolidated Shelby State Community College and State Technical Institute at Memphis. This is a full- time, fiscal year tenure track faculty appointment with management and supervisory responsibilities as the Department Chair of Mathematics.

The Department Chair provides leadership, management, planning, and advocacy for faculty and programs within the unit.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees and evaluates all academic programs related to the Mathematics department, and supervises curriculum implementation.

• Facilitates curriculum development; the hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty; and makes teaching assignments each term.

• Develops and monitors departmental budgets including grants, goals and plans, and develops class schedules each semester.

• Supervises the development of Institutional Effectiveness departmental plans and program reviews, academic audits, and accreditations associated with the department.

• Supervises all evaluation and personnel academic activities conducted by the department.

• Resolves student, faculty, and staff problems to the extent possible.

• Serves on Division, College, and state-wide committees.

• Collaborates with area colleges to articulate programs.

• Networks with community agencies by serving on various committees/boards and
conducts professional development activities.

• Teaches 1-3 courses per semester, fall and spring

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in one of the discipline in the assigned department.

Five (5) years of full-time teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience in administration, higher education administration preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics

• Experience or administrative record that demonstrates leadership.

• Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for students and the measurement of training effects.

• Ability to lead strategic planning, program accreditation review as necessary, and assessment in the interest of promoting academic program excellence.

• Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.

• Excellent written and verbal skills, including the ability to master complex issues and convey information clearly for varied audiences; and ability to develop and communicate goals in support of the College’s mission.

• Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintain them over time.

• Ability to interact with a diverse population.

• Ability to exhibit emotional control and stability and manage stress.
