Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. This is a term appointment in the Department of Languages and Literature.

The chief responsibilities for the Instructor include delivery of instruction and evaluation of student work in ACAD 1100 Academic Success Seminar.

Teaching load will include, on occasion, ENGL 1010 and/or ENGL 1020.
In addition, duties will include maintaining office hours, advising students, and serving on departmental and College committees.

Assigned duties may include teaching evening and weekend classes, as well as teaching on multiple campuses.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Delivers instruction in college-level courses as assigned. Full-time load is 15 hours per semester.

• Advises students in General Studies programs, and other advising duties as required.

• Maintains office hours for students seeking academic advice, assists in student recruitment and retention; and assists students with course-related problems outside of the classroom.

• Maintains accurate student attendance records, grades, and other required records in compliance with federal FERPA regulations..

• Serves on college, division, and departmental committees, and supports and participates in student activities.

• Mentors adjunct faculty.

• May perform other duties as assigned by Department Head or Dean.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in English or Creative Writing; or master’s degree in any field plus 18 graduate hours in English.

• Strong academic preparation in English.

• Excellent presentation and organizational skills.

• Commitment to teaching at the two-year college level.

• Proficiency with computers and instructional technology.

• Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning; experience interacting successfully with academically and culturally diverse student populations.

• Skill in selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.

• Ability to integrate technology into course delivery.

• Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.

• Ability to interact with a diverse student population.
