Position Summary

Southwest Tennessee Community College is a comprehensive, multicultural, public, open—access college. This is a temporary part-time position in the Project M.O.S.T. program reporting to the Director.

The Academic Tutor provides learning support and coaching to students outside the classroom in the areas of Developmental Writing to cover the levels of basic writing through developmental writing.

In addition, the Academic Tutor also provides learning support and coaching to students in the areas of English & Literature to cover the levels of English composition I & II through American, British, World and/or African-American literature.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides private instruction to individual or small groups of students to improve academic performance, improve occupational skills, or prepare for academic or occupational tests.

• Teaches students basic and developmental writing skills, concepts in composition I & II, and test-taking strategies.

• Assesses students’ progress throughout tutoring sessions.

• Develops teaching or training materials, such as handouts, study materials, or quizzes.

• Identifies, develops, or implements intervention strategies, tutoring plans, or individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.

• Prepares lesson plans or learning modules for tutoring sessions according to students’ needs and goals.

• May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Associate’s degree in related fields.

One year of experience tutoring in a structured learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in related field
